Automotive Tint Law in California

Windshield

Tint on the windshield is allowed only on the top 4 inches from the top of the windshield.

Front Side Windows

Must allow more than 70% of light in. This means they must be pretty clear and cannot be heavily tinted. “Tint Crew” interprets that all automotive glasses for two front door windows come with a 70% VLT. This means that adding any additional tint would likely push the VLT below the legal limit, making it illegal.

Back Side Windows and Rear Window

Any darkness can be used for vehicles with dual side mirrors. For others, it needs to be at least 70% light transmission.

Reflectivity

For the front side and back side windows, reflectivity must not be more than a standard window.

Medical Exemptions

Some drivers can get a medical exemption for darker windows or more window tinting. This typically requires documentation from a physician.
