When to Replace Your Window Tint.

Five signs. And why ceramic film changes the timeline.

We remove old window film every week. Most installs last 5-8 years before they start showing their age. But the signs that your film is dying are easy to miss — until a sunny afternoon reveals a problem you've been driving with for months.

Five Signs Your Film Is Done

1. Bubbles

Air pockets between the film and the glass mean the adhesive has failed. Starts at the edges, spreads inward. Irreversible once started.

2. Purple / Orange Color

Cheap dyed films from the '90s turned purple when the dye broke down under UV. Modern carbon and ceramic films don't do this — but we still see old films with the telltale color shift.

3. Cracking

Dry, brittle film with visible fractures. Usually shows up on rear windshields first (most UV exposure).

4. Peeling at Edges

Film lifts away from the glass at the corners or edges. Sometimes a defrost wire got too hot. Sometimes the film is just old.

5. Fogging / Haze

Looks like the inside of the glass is dirty, but no amount of cleaning helps. The haze is inside the film.

What Ceramic Film Changes

Dyed carbon films (the cheap ones) last 3-5 years. Carbon films last 5-8. Ceramic films — LLumar CTX, Rayno Phantom S5, LLumar IRX — carry lifetime warranties and we regularly remove installs that are 10-15 years old and still look new. The failure mode changes from “chemical breakdown” to “mechanical wear.”

Translation: if you buy ceramic, you probably won't replace it. You'll sell the car first.

Can I Just Re-Tint Over Old Film?

No. The old adhesive is toxic. The new film needs clean glass to bond. We strip the old film (this is where most of the labor time goes), wash and decontaminate the glass, then install fresh film. Figure 2-4 hours per car for a full removal + re-install.

Rear windshields with defrost wires take the longest. The wires are fragile and the old adhesive wants to cling. A rushed removal is how defrosters get damaged — we take our time here.

Removal Service

We remove old film as a standalone service. $100-200 per car depending on condition. If you book a re-install at the same time, the removal fee is waived.

If you're not sure whether your film is worth keeping, stop by. We'll look at it in the bay and tell you the honest answer — including “it's fine, drive it another two years.”
